Vuzix Corp. Wrap 920 : Customer Reviews

I bought the Wrap920 for use in Augmented Reality, looking for a cheaper solution to the high quality HMDs I used before (10,000$ and more). I must say that the Wrap is quite good for 300 dollars. At the same time I don't think most VR/AR users will be entirely happy with this device. The 15 degrees FOV are a bit poor and every user should adjust the glasses before use. Still it's nice to have an alternative if I work from home.
I tried watching movies with the HMD as well. It's nothing like a wearable big-screen TV, but it works and after a few minutes you forget you're wearing the glasses. The HMD is not too heavy, still it gets uncomfortable after an hour or so. It's nice to be able to lie down and relax while watching. I felt a bit cross-eyed for a minute after use. I doubt frequent use is healthy for the eyes.
The resolution is just 640x480. That's fine for 2D movies and such. I bought the VGA adapter so I can do stereoscopic 3D. Careful here. They use side-by-side for 3D, so the resolution is effectively just 320x480 per view (stretched to 640x480). Forget about reading text and the images start to look blurry.
The quality of the monitors is okay. They have a bit of a red smear but unless you have a stark contrast like white font on black background you will not notice it.
The Wrap comes with a cable for iPhone/iPodTouch. I really don't care about that, but I tried and those who want to use the Wrap on a plane should know that you will not see the same thing in the glasses as on your iPhone screen. In fact, I saw black all the time, except when playing a movie, and some apps like TED didn't give me an output at all.
